2025 Charity One-ball competition in aid of Alzheimer's Society

We held a heat of the Croquet England’s Charity One-ball Competition on Saturday 19th April 2025.  Whilst this is a national competition (and there’s an opportunity to go to a national final), it was really a chance to get people together at the start of the season, raise some money for charity and have a fun day.  Tea/coffee and cake was involved, and we even got some specatators!

One ball is an easy game to learn designed to be played by players of both Association Croquet and Golf Croquet, with each game taking about 30 minutes.  There are more details in the One-ball section at the bottom of the resources page.

Ten people entered the competition with two blocks of five being played on the half-lawns.  Heather dominated the first block winning all her games, with David coming second winning his other three games.  In the other block, Roger W won three of his games, and Keith, Roger B, and Stephen all won two games but Keith went through to the semi-finals on the 'who-beat-who' tie-break.

The semi-finals were Roger W vs David and Heather vs Keith. Heather and Roger maintained their consistency to reach the final.  The final was one of the closest matches of the day with both having opportunities to run the final hoop to win, but in an attempt to roquet Heathers ball which was in the jaws of the final hoop, Roger played a spectacular (but unintended) jump shot from the boundary which went through the hoop over Heather's ball allowing Heather to gain the final hoop and win the competition.

We raised £140 for the Alzheimer's Society which means that both Heather and Roger W can represent St Albans in the Finals Day at Surbiton or Nottingham.
